🏔️ Best time to go

Prime months: Jan · Feb · Mar · Apr · Dec.

Season opens early Dec with fresh early-season snow, lower lift prices, and illuminated snow-monster ropeway on select evenings through late December.

Long spring season (into early May) with mellow, crowd-free weekday skiing, firm consolidated snow, and mountain views on sunny Tohoku days.

Peak powder window with Japow at its deepest (~12m annual snowfall); late Jan–Feb also peak for snow monsters (juhyo) when -50°F to -59°F temps sculpt ice-encrusted fir trees into eerie formations.

Yamagata Zao Onsen Ski Resort packs 881 m (2,890 ft) of vertical, famous juhyo snow-monster tree glades, open summit bowls, groomed cruisers, and deep Tohoku powder averaging 153 cm (60 in) at the summit.

Also known for: Soaking in outdoor onsen hot springs après-ski; local soul food is imoni (taro-and-beef stew)
