Prime months: Jan · Feb · Mar · Jul · Aug · Sep · Oct · Nov · Dec.

Whale sharks and mantas arrive as conditions improve post-rains; visibility recovers sharply with fewer divers on site.

Peak season: visibility up to 130ft, water 81–84°F, whale sharks & manta rays actively feeding in the Pemba Channel.

Dry shoulder season with solid 65–100ft visibility; humpback whales migrate north through the channel in August–September.

🤿 The diving

Pemba's west-coast walls — Njao Gap, Fundu Reef, Misali Coral Gardens, and Emerald Bay — are all boat/panga-access drift dives hitting 79–86°F water with 30–40 m (98–131 ft) visibility; west-side sites suit all levels, east/south walls are advanced-only.

Also known for: Clove capital of the world — the island produces the bulk of Tanzania's cloves; signature dish is octopus curry simmered in coconut milk with local spices
