This is The Drop, a short weekly note on what our deal engine is seeing across the 145 dive and ski/snowboard destinations we track from Midwest airports. What we caught, what the data says, and one thing worth knowing before you book.
① What we caught
The one worth explaining: $249 round trip, Detroit to Cozumel. That route normally runs close to $500. Prices this far off usually last a few hours, and this one did. The engine caught it because it checks every fare against months of stored history for that exact route, so it knew right away this wasn't a normal sale. With hotel and two-tank days figured in, the whole trip came out 44% below normal.

One thing to own up to: in mid-July we found a bug where a single popular destination was eating most of the scanner's attention. We fixed it, and the alert count above is what the engine looks like running the way it should. You'll get that kind of honesty here. It's more useful than pretending the robot is perfect.
② The trend: winter is booking now
23 of the last 38 alerts are for December trips. Booked in July.
This happens every year, earlier than people expect. Airlines load their winter schedules, almost nobody shops December flights in July, and the fares sit low. Right now that looks like Geneva (the gateway for Chamonix, Zermatt, and Verbier) at $648 from Chicago, Banff at $340 from Detroit, and Whistler at $438 from Cincinnati. Those are peak December dates, for skiers and snowboarders both.
The warm side is the same story. USVI, Saba, Statia, and the Bahamas are pricing 30 to 55% below normal from Ohio airports for December right now. In our data the cheap December seats get bought in July and August. By October they're gone and prices are back to normal.

③ Field note: Saba & Statia, the two-for-one
That $395 Columbus fare covers two islands on one ticket. Saba and Statia sit a short hop apart, no cruise port on either, and the diving is some of the quietest good diving left in the Caribbean. Fair warning from our destination notes: Saba's best sites are pinnacles with real current, better suited to divers with some experience. December is dry season there, which is the right time to go.
